The 3W Compass of Life

Posted on with 4 comments

My greatest compass in life has been the three W questions;
Who I am?
Where do I come from?
And where am going to?
Do you really know and understand who you are? Are you just floating about like a feather in the wind? Genuinely being who you are is more important that what others expect you to be. Who you are will show in what you do. When you are certain of who you are, you can’t be ashamed of how someone else sees you. Who you are is your conviction of the real and true you. If you spend so much time pretending to be someone else, you will soon forget who you are. You have a unique finger and footprint. That should tell you something. The world is like a giant paper, and we are like pencils…as we walk the earth we leave messages on the earth. The constructiveness of our movements determines if the messages we live behind will be read, understood and remembered. Determining who you are is actually finding your center and focus. It is finding you root in this world. The more you know who you are and what you want, the fewer things will upset you. You just have to own who you are, that is your identity in this world. What makes you different is what makes you beautiful. Market the real you to the world. Do not let the crap this world is selling drive you into hiding your true identity. The art of understanding who you are, sets rules and grounds for decisions on; friendships, relationships, career, spirituality and a lot more. Living with the flow means anyone and anything is allowed in your life.
Realizing who you are gives you that center and focus that draws reasonable boundaries. You start recruiting people and things into your life that will build the person you know yourself to be. If you don’t know who you are or have forgotten who you are, it’s time to start finding that person. Return to the things you genuinely love, visit the activities that gladdened your heart…In the truth of doing the things you know you were born to do, you will find yourself. When you do, never forget who you are.
Where do you come from? Yeah I guess you will start naming a country, a village and so on. That’s not the answer to that question. Where do you come from? What does the place you come from mean to you? What does the place you come from stand for? What role did that place play in your life? What are your attachments to that place? What devotion do you have towards that place? What values have you derived from that origin? Do you ever ask yourself such questions?  “It is always good to remember where you come from and celebrate it. To remember where you come from is part of where you are going…”Anthony Burgess. The country, town, village or families we come from tells us a lot about ourselves. That was not just a place, it meant something. Most times we derive our future journeys based on how we defined where we came from. This is of great importance to us as humans. Our restraints, values, tolerance and a lot of other attributes we bear are derived from where we came from. Where you come from tells you a story from 2 dimensions; the good and the bad. The negatives of where we come from and the positives of where we come from played a role in our growth. I know you may be thinking, what does where I come from have to do with anything in my present life. Where you come from represents your roots. You may or may not like where you come from, but it represents your essences/foundation. You always have to remember your roots because they are the foundation of your life and the wings of your future. A person without knowledge of their past, origin and culture lacks a foundation. You may be an orphan, a refugee and so on; but have in mind that the society you were nurtured in offered you a foundation. Strong roots will definitely produce many beautiful leaves and healthy fruits.
As Africans, I think many of the problems we are facing today stems from the fact that most of us have lost touch with our roots especially our leaders. Without deep roots even the lightest wind of adversity will blow us away. Assets such as patriotism, cultural pride, cultural preservation, nation building and much more are expressly embedded in the firm attachment of our roots to the land of our substance. The reason we find ourselves lost is because we did not understand our foundation. You can not define your destination without clearly understanding where you come from. I live in Cameroon and I come from Cameroon. If I have to move from Cameroon to Ghana, I must first know where exactly I am in Cameroon and from there I will know how to locate the airport and board a plane for Ghana. If I have to blindly wonder of in Cameroon to find the airport, there are two possibilities; I may never find the airport or I may take an unusually long time before finding my destination. Roots don’t need to define you, they are a reminder of how you started and as such set up the needed momentum for you to launch into a clearly defined future. As you will walk forward, you will have to look back at where you came from, in order to be grateful and inspired. Understanding the history of the people you came from is important. That history should tell you what you should not repeat and also help you identify what works so you will never let go of it. When you truly understand where you come from, you can then define where you are going.
Where are you going? Has your life any direction? Where you came from had no power to define who you are, but where you are going will be expression of who you are and thus will clearly define you. Where you are going is your destination and purpose. Once your purpose is clear, you can bring out the paper and map out strategic goals that will get you to your destination. The glow on our lives is not so much in our destination, but the many beautiful little goals we get to achieve to get to that final destination. The struggles of the journey, the milestones and the conquests all blend in to spruce up our existence. If you really want to understand the importance of having no defined destination, wake up one morning and walk about aimlessly with no direction. You did not put any thought or planning into that walk. You paid no attention to the path or the things along the way, because the path didn’t matter as you have no particular destination in mind. That is just how life works. When we live without a compass or focus, we put little or no effort into whatever we do. We tend to face our studies, career and life in general with no enthusiasm when we have no specific point of focus. A destination offers you a vision and a dream.
Maturity is attained when we grasp a clear understanding of who we are and where we come from and translate that into a purposeful destination. These are very easy reading from paper, that actually living it out in practically. Take a walk or sit in an open space alone, think of your family, and community. What were the values you picked up from them? Are those values ones that motivate you and set out principles for you to live by? Who do you really think you are? Are you fun, outgoing, a leader or an innovator? When you leave or you public circles and find yourself alone, what is your view of yourself? Are you living a life scripted by someone else? Have you any conviction about your life? Why are you here? When you wake up every day from bed, what motivates you? Are you dead while you are living? Do you live just to whine the time till your breath stops? When all this is over, what will someone remember you for? Get serious and get answers to these questions. Your life is meaningful, you were meant to leave a mark on this earth. You are relevant to the world, the fact that you don’t see that yet, does not make it untrue. We were not just created to breathe and die; if that were the case, so much work and ingenuity would not have been invested into our being. Find your essence of existence and unleash that miracle into the world. Heal someone, teach someone, comfort someone, touch someone, in fact, be someone.
“You have a fingerprint that no one else has, to leave an imprint that no one else can leave.” Keith Craft

IT WASN’T ABOUT FINISHING FIRST…IT’S ABOUT FINISHING

Posted on with No comments

No matter how strong we are or believe ourselves to be, we are most times unavoidably faced with the desire to quit. Most time when we feel something we used to love isn’t as perfect anymore or isn’t winning anymore, we often find it easier to drop it and walk away. The real questions are;
-was winning ever about finishing first?
-was winning about getting a pat on the shoulder, a trophy or a medal?
-was winning about getting rich?
-was winning about getting your face in a magazine?
You may never finish first. You wouldn’t get a pat on the back all the time. You might not earn medals or trophies…So you are just going to toss in the towel and leave because it isn’t perfect. Would you just give up on a marriage or friendship because that person is not perfect anymore? Would you bury that dream because it easy as easy as you wanted it to be? If it was all about perfection, finishing first and getting a trophy; you lost before you even started. Let me introduce you to winning;
-Winning is finishing
-Winning is pulling yourself to cross that finish line even when you body tells you, you can’t
-Winning is knowing that no matter what storm came, no matter what anyone said or did, no matter what was thrown at you, you kept running and you finished.
What is that dream you have? What is that project you are passionate about? It may not be perfect yet, you may feel alone and unsupported on your venture, but I challenge you to finish. Trust me there is no feeling greater than that which you have when you know you defied every obstacle to get to where you are at. Sugar cane is sweetest at the joint, the joint is the hardest part to chew and yet the sweetest. Take your eyes off other runners and focus on your race…there will always be an urge to quit, but don’t. Sometimes you will have to lose to win again…You may slip many time…Come what , run to finish…Finish your race…that will make you a winner…Be an inspiration to someone, show them you finished even with a broken limb. It was never about finishing first…winning was about finishing…finish on your goals, dreams, education, and everything you set out to accomplish…that’s true winning…

THE RIGHT MOMENT

Posted on with No comments

We always console ourselves that we are waiting for the right moment; we often convince ourselves we are waiting for the; right time, right person, right job, right opportunity. What if we have had the right moment with us all along? What if we missed that special moment because our eyes were fixed looking for a right moment? I have grown to realize the so called right moment we claim we are looking for is just an excuse and consolation for not embracing the perfect moment within our reach. Human discontent has carved us into a niche where we have come to believe that things out of our reach will make us happy. What exactly is ‘right’?
-You are desperately looking for Mr. and Mrs. Perfect and yet you put that one person who loves you most in the friend zone.
-We don’t tell people we love them or care about them until they die.
-You have someone whose forgiveness you badly need and you are waiting to be on your dying bed before you do so.
-You have a dream and a gift to share with the world, and you excuse yourself for not fighting hard enough with it’s not the right time excuse.
-You are looking for a perfect friend, and ignoring all the people sacrificing for you.
We sometimes feed off the discontent of feeling that we are not within the perfect milieu; such is a very dangerous assumption. Most times we are just afraid or uncertain to grab what is already within our reach. If we accustom ourselves with the ‘not right yet’ excuse, we not only embrace laziness but soon embrace envy of those who embrace what within their reach. Humanity is gifted with an ability to create. Everything around us is a tool, a symbol and an asset. We have the power to create. We can create the right opportunities, and moments in our lives. Embrace yourself with all your flaws and the world will do same. Shape yourself into the person you love to be; do it for you first. You are just right; show that to the world. Be the right person; then you will realize the right moments, opportunities and right persons for your life. Crawl out of that bubble of discontent and be grateful enough to embrace what you already have.
Stay you!
God Bless!

Spread your wings and fly...

-Because you hurt so much, you will learn to love so much.
-Because you lacked so much, you will learn to give so much.
-Because no one else believed in you, you learnt so much to believe in yourself.
-Because so much was taken from you, you fought hard to be somebody.
-Because someone turned their back on you, you know better than to turn your back on someone else.
-Because someone took you voice away, you have learnt to be someone else voice.
-Because no one listened to you, you learnt to offer your ears to someone else.
-When they held you down, you refused to stay down.
-When they counted you out, you refused to stay out.
-The storms developed the eagle in you and now you soar above the clouds.
-Where are you at?
  -Has some one turned their back on you?
  -Has someone told you your dream is a joke?
  -Has someone thrown your ideas into the trash?
  -Is someone holding you down?
You could stay down and be crushed, or you could let out the eagle in you. When all other birds die in or evade the storm, the eagle flies above the clouds, above the storms. Pain, disappointment and trials push us to grow beyond our zone of comfort. Instead of whining, hating and complaining, open up to growth. There are certain pains and instances in our lives we would never be able to get rid of, but we have the ability to grow above the pain. Will the pain be there? Yes, but you can grow to be elevated above the pain. Growth will increase your ability and strength so what hurt so bad yesterday will feel like tickles today. Do not see your storm as an excuse to back down, view it as a push for growth. When someone walks out on you, bid them well, they are making room for better people in your life. To mature, your associations have to mature with you. Has someone told you it cannot be done? It’s time to move on and get it done…Let go of the world you are hanging on to and fly…spread your wings and fly….
Stay you!
God Bless!

HONOURING TIME…

Posted on with 2 comments

“Black man time” is a common phrase used in Cameroon. It is very normal for an event to start 2hours later than the scheduled time. It has gone so bad that if you hope to start an event early, you have to actually give the guests or invitees a 2 or 3 hours time slot earlier. Even at that, the event won’t start early. We play around so much with time; we don’t actually understand the consequences of dishonoring time. Anyone who doesn’t keep to time they scheduled for an appointment, tells people that;
1)      I am not disciplined.
2)      Other people’s time is not important to me.
3)      My word cannot be trusted. I said I will be here at 3 am and arrived at 6am, next time don’t take my word for it.
4)      I do not have a steady plan by which I live by…I flow with the wind.
5)      I am not a serious person.
6)      I cannot be trusted with responsibility. I can’t make it in time to meet up any emergencies or deadlines.
Sometimes we dishonor appointments with mates, relatives, and people we are conversant with. We just brush this bad attitude off because we believe these people won’t mind us being late. Little bad habits stick and actually become character. The bad habit of dishonoring time, could cost you a career and to extremes someone’s life or even yours. How you honor time tells people a lot about you;
1)      It says you are trustworthy and honor you word.
2)      It shows you are organized and discipline.
3)      It shows you can be trusted with responsibility.
4)      It shows you respect other. When you honor time in keeping and appointment with someone else, you tell that person their time is important to you.
5)      It says you are serious and mean business.
How you honor time as a student will have an effect on you in your career. Our officials should learn to respect time and not leave crowds of people standing in the sun. At our public offices, time should be respected. Many people have missed important exams, interviews and opportunities because of their attitude towards being on time. Take time seriously. Live on a schedule. Don’t be blown by the wind. Time keepers live life to the full. Avoid wasting time. Account for time. You waste it, you can’t return to get it back. Honor appointments and be on time. Let us schedule events for a particular time and actually start at that time. Time is precious; let us treat it as such.
God Bless!
